No matter what happens after high school the majority of the students usually have to live on their own, whether they are ready for it or not. At Northglenn High School there are plenty of classes here that help students prepare for the rest of their life, including the great classes of food skills and creative foods.

The food courses are for students to get better knowledge or for the second level class to extend their levels within the kitchen and with food. Food skills teach students all the equipment in the kitchen, how to measure different ingredients, and just the basic things around the kitchen.

Ms. Fisher, one of the cooking teachers, believed there are many benefits in taking a foods class.

“One important thing is cost, with household budget is limited and if you know how to prepare foods you will be able to know prices and save.”

With being able to control the cost, it is easier to watch what they are eating as well;

“Control diet better, knowing what is in the food makes us more aware of the amount of fat and sugar. Make better choices in the food selected.”

The food classes help students to possibly look into different career choices that have to do with food; like technologist, restaurants, FDA, and other Health Departments. The class reviews various basic math skills and fractions that help in the future.

Students also meet new people along the way that they have to work with.

“They get to work with different age groups and levels of knowledge, where other classes everyone is all at the same level and age.” Ms. Fisher stated. “Students get a fun perspective on different kinds of food and the hope is for them to take the information learned and take it back home.”

The food classes are highly beneficial to take to help prepare for the future. Senior Brittany Thorstensen believes the class is benificial, ” It is fun. It gives more ideas at home to help out our parents and helps later in life to know what to do.”
