The King and Queen of the Norse is a tradition Northglenn High School throws on every year. It is a competition similar to a beauty pageant; picture an American Idol themed competition with a twist!

The contestants undergo rounds of answering questions/interviews and present their talent to Northglenn High School. At the end, due to crowd votes, there will be one king and one queen. The king and Queen of the Norse will receive $250 for the club/organization/team of their choice and a $100 gift card of their own to Wal-Mart! 1st runner-ups receive $50 for the club/organization/team of their choice and $50 Wal-Mart gift card. 2nd runner-ups will receive $25 for the club/organization/team of their choice and $20 gift card to Wal-Mart.

It’s a good cause that benefits you and the school. It’s a fun event that gets the school involved, every year we discover students’ new talents and you get to know them on a better level.

Senior Taylor Marvin, 2011 King of the Norse, said that his experience was very fun. He got to meet some great friends and see a lot of unexpected talent.

Marvin said, “I loved seeing all the talented people in the school and how much support everyone had!”

When asked what he had gained from the experience, he replied with “It helped me work on my interview and performance skills.”

Words of advice from Taylor Marvin: “Make sure your talent is rehearsed perfectly and be ready for anything in the interview portion!”

But do not be intimidated, from Lady Gaga on the flute to comedic routines, students show off what they got. Don’t be embarrassed to burp your ABC’s or sing on stage, King and Queen of the Norse is a tradition that brings us together.

So sign up, or invite your friends and family to an eventful night! The 2012 King and Queen of the Norse Competition will be held Wednesday, February 1st, 6:00 pm, in the auditorium.

No matter what happens after high school the majority of the students usually have to live on their own, whether they are ready for it or not. At Northglenn High School there are plenty of classes here that help students prepare for the rest of their life, including the great classes of food skills and creative foods.

The food courses are for students to get better knowledge or for the second level class to extend their levels within the kitchen and with food. Food skills teach students all the equipment in the kitchen, how to measure different ingredients, and just the basic things around the kitchen.

Ms. Fisher, one of the cooking teachers, believed there are many benefits in taking a foods class.

“One important thing is cost, with household budget is limited and if you know how to prepare foods you will be able to know prices and save.”

With being able to control the cost, it is easier to watch what they are eating as well;

“Control diet better, knowing what is in the food makes us more aware of the amount of fat and sugar. Make better choices in the food selected.”

The food classes help students to possibly look into different career choices that have to do with food; like technologist, restaurants, FDA, and other Health Departments. The class reviews various basic math skills and fractions that help in the future.

Students also meet new people along the way that they have to work with.

“They get to work with different age groups and levels of knowledge, where other classes everyone is all at the same level and age.” Ms. Fisher stated. “Students get a fun perspective on different kinds of food and the hope is for them to take the information learned and take it back home.”

The food classes are highly beneficial to take to help prepare for the future. Senior Brittany Thorstensen believes the class is benificial, ” It is fun. It gives more ideas at home to help out our parents and helps later in life to know what to do.”

Since February 2005, when YouTube was created by three former PayPal employees, the video-sharing website has became the most popular worldwide site for uploading, sharing and viewing videos. The site uses HTML5 and Adobe Flash Video technology to display a wide variety of user-generated video content, including clips from movies and TV shows, along with music videos, video blogging and also short original videos.

Every now and then YouTube viewers can usually expect to see something new when they come onto the website, but as of lately YouTube has become a hot spotlight for individuals to make themselves known to people worldwide, some channels even gained up to over one million of views, including our very own Northglenn graduate 2010 Alex Thao. Alex’s channel has been one of the most popular channels on YouTube with his amazing voice doing several covers and every now and then, creates his own songs, and also just recently during December of 2011, Alex had finished his Album and was released sometime near New Year’s Day. Some of his original includes; “Once in a Lifetime,” “You are the One,” “Fly Away With Me,” and “One, Two, Three.”

While Alex sings his heart out like many YouTube artists, Lindsey Starling prefers to play the violin while at the same time, dance. Lindsey; a hyper spontaneous girl, has her own sense of music, something that many has never heard before. She once appeared on television on America’s Got Talent and has been known on the show as the Hip Hop Violinist. Though she came so close to winning, and she was one of the finalists, unfortunately she fell short on votes, but since then she has been traveling, working with music companies, touring with Charley Jenkins country band for about a year, and she has collaborated with another YouTube artist, Epic feat. She writes her own music with the help of Marko G; who aids her in making her music with layers of sounds, and with the aid of Devin Graham who helps in creating her music videos, like; “Electric Daisy Violin”, “Spontaneous Me”, while she also did covers of “Celtic Carol”, “Silent Night”, “Zelda Medley”, and “River Flows in You”, her music and form of art is something that many has never seen before. In her populist music video, “Transcendence”, which was directed by, Nathan D. Lee, assisted by Erich Cannon, photography by Derek Pueblo, Dalton Skinner on computer tech, and Lindsey Starling editor and main actor of “Transcendence”, together they have created the most unique meaningful video about the reality of appearance; where individuals, guys or girls allows others to influence them-in determining who they think they are, specially the public media and the world, telling individuals what they should look like, what shape they should be-just trying to put everyone in a box. The idea of the video is that we, as individuals are really the ones who determine who we really are.

Other then music as a way to inspire and express individuals, some channels are about having fun while playing a few harmless pranks. ImprovEverywhere is a channel on YouTube where viewers can watch harmless pranks and their slogan is “We Cause Scenes”, the pranks-ImprovEverywhere itself focuses on positive impulse, bringing joy to other people making them smile and brightening their day. This performance art group was formed in 2001 by Charlie Todd, who is interested in proving that comedy doesn’t have to happen on stage, it could happen anywhere at any time, the goal of Improv is to get as many people to participate in the prank (mission) as possible (depending on what kind of prank it is), that way at the end of the day, someone would have an interesting story to tell for the rest of their life. Originally the group was based in New York City but unexpectedly the ideas of the pranks began to spread, to Italy, France, Sweden, similar pranks to that of ImprovEverywhere were being copy around the world for fun entertainment and good joy.

Even up to the present date the site still holds some surprising content; some may be funny, sad, inspiring, creatively beautiful, and just entertaining for users.

New Years Eve is commonly the most celebrated night in the country. Fireworks displays, loud music and champagne are always a given, followed by the last minute countdown of ending the year and refreshing the new year. However, the guests of the Denver Tech Center Marriott started their new year by finding they all had been locked out of their rooms. All 628 rooms had been locked, and none of the registered key cards had been working. When given new key cards to the guest’s rooms, the keys still were not working. It was not until 3am that an employee went and opened everyone’s rooms with a master key.

When asked about how he felt, Northglenn High School teacher, Joe Croteau responded, “I first felt frustrated then I thought it was comical, and then by the second hour I was very upset.” He reported seeing fights break out. Drunken guests were relieving themselves in the corners of the hallway. The more violent guests were reported trying to break the doors down while no police or Marriott personnel were patrolling the halls.

Although the hotel could find no legitimate reasoning as to the malfunction they are simply writing the incident off as a small computer glitch. The following morning each guest received a formal apology slipped under their door. The apology included compensation for the guest’s rooms. Though in Joe Croteau’s opinion, “[the reimbursement] didn’t make up for the screaming people.”

A campus supervisor is an important position to the students and staff of Northglenn. Bev our campus supervisor has been with Northglenn for thirteen years. In the course of her day, she is there to protect us, provide advice and a safe haven.

One aspect of her job is to protect us. She mediates disagreements and violent events between students. She also provides a keen eye for anyone that may be a threat to our school, by insisting that all students wear ID’s. She is also always there to greet us on her golf cart. In fact, it happens to be that our safety is one of Bev’s top priorities.

In our greatest time of need, Bev is always willing to listen to all of our problems, and she is highly engaged in the process of our education. She keeps us prompt and on task. Another sign of Bev’s dedication is that she takes the time to get to know the majority of students and staff.

When hormonal teens coming running to her she is always happy to provide us with a solution or answers to are questions. Senior Caitlyn Nelson stated, “I think Bev is an amazing friend and is almost like a grandmother to me.” Students can always count on Bev to be their when needed, whether the problem is big or small you can always count on her to provide a safe haven.

Its obvious to all of us that Bev to the students that Bev loves her job. Her commitment has lead to our school being one of the safest and most supportive schools in Colorado. It is safe to say that Bevis one of the greatest role models of Northglenn High School.

For years the human mind has been stimulated by the possibility of altering their physical bodies. Only 18 months until the technology is introduced to America. RegenTec labs is credited with this scientific breakthrough in which a bone “cement”, taking the viscosity of tooth paste, can be injected into the body. This therapy will be used as medicine in which it provides a path for stem cells to reach the affected area. The British researchers who synthesized this product were awarded with the Medical Futures Innovation Award.

In the future, when we break or fracture our bones, it will be less serious of an injury because of this new procedure. This program is also being applied in other ways so that more than just bone can be benefited by it.

This past Friday, December ninth, was an eventful day. Not just due to the atmosphere of another Friday closer to the weekend or even closer to break, but rather the DECA District competition of this 2011 school year.

Few students, apart from DECA members, know what DECA and the competitions are all about. When we asked Kristine Sampson, marketing teacher and DECA co-sponsor what DECA is, she answered, “DECA is a fun and exciting club for marketing students. Districts is a competition against five other schools in role play and testing situations to qualify for the state conference.”

During these competitions students get fancy, get pumped, and get DECA. (“Get DECA” is the Western Region Leadership Conference motto this year.) Over 500 students piled into Johnson & Wales’ beautiful campus to experience DECA districts 2011. Students first began their experience with an eight a.m. opening session, followed by a one hundred question multiple choice test and finally the role play contest.

In role play situations members enter in different marketing, finance, hospitality and management circumstances. A role play example may be creating a new way to display a clothing line or how to develop clientele and expand your hotel line.

Whatever the case, DECA members experience real life situations and must think logically and creatively off the top of their head. Quick thinking and a great performance is necessary for a member to place top ten percent in their division of competition and score a spot to the State Conference at the Broadmoor Hotel February 25, 2012. The State Conference gives qualifiers three nights and four days in the prestigious hotel and an amazing experience.

When Nordic Times asked Mrs. Sampson how successful she predicted students would be and qualify for the State Conference, she stated, “We have a talented and determined group and I am hoping to have 30 or so qualifiers.” 30 qualifiers out of 63 attending Northglenn students would be quite the accomplishment for Northglenn DECA.

Numerous students did accomplish their goals and did qualify for the State Conference. Alexandra Harris- Senior, Ryan Mera- Junior, and Garrett Tyler- Sophomore are just three of the large grouping who landed a spot at the Broadmoor Hotel this upcoming February.

Garrett Tyler, qualifier in Principles of Marketing, said,”It felt great to win because I was able to beat the kids who are always talking down to Northglenn. (Mountain Range)”

The list of State qualifiers are as follows:

Emily Majors and Vreni Lewis, Hospitality Team

Emily Moyer and Mystie Brown, Hospitality Team

Carl Seaholm and Tyler Helms, Business Law & Ethics

Martin Diaz and Cody Reavis, Financial Team

Garrett Tyler, Principles of Marketing

Analicia Torralba, Hospitality/Tourism Professional Selling

Samantha Dennis, Hotal and Lodging Management

Ryan Mera, Human Resources Management

Alexandra Harris, Food Marketing

C.J. Dowling and Nathan Clark, Travel/Tourism Team

Emily Gale and Haley Burke, Travel/Tourism Team

Ellena Vo, State Officer

Life; 1. The quality that distinguishes animals and plants from inanimate objects. 2. The period of being alive. 3. Living things. 4. Manner of living. 5. Animation.

If you were to look up life on dictionary.com, that would be your results. If it isn’t obvious not even the dictionary can truly define life. So what is life?

Life is most likely how you just answered that question. Your own perspective. We are all individuals of self certainty in which we live by something that is also hard to explain. We are all born into this ideal world in which everyone is told how things are ran in all different aspects. It is then our ‘choice’ to do as we please with it. This then brings up other questions, who are you and what do you stand for? If you’re able to define that to a 100% T, congratulations, you’re one of millions. Why? Because we’re all this big work of progress in such a way we change our minds every day. No two days are 100% alike and neither are our thoughts. If our thoughts change everyday then so would our definition of life, ourselves and rather we can truly define it or not. We’re all unique because we are who we are.

Q: Please define, life:

Megan Ciotta, freshman,

A: “To live life to its fullest”

Teddy Alemu, Junior,

A: “Life is not fair for everybody.”

It took about three minutes of thought before they came up with the easiest answer they could put. It is not an easy defiance, everyone could say that. Most answers were ‘I don’t know’ with a frustration of not thinking of something good enough to say. Think about it though, how do you define life?

People say that everyone is good at something, And for Jesus Burciaga A.K.A Chumiez, its skateboarding. He started off as a rollerblader. It was something for him to do with his friends.

One day his brother, Andy Burciaga (Northglenn Alumni), convinced him to try skateboarding. He got on his board and was like a natural. He didn’t know much but it didn’t take him long to learn.

I asked Chumiez what his first trick was and he told me, “The first trick I landed was a kick flip it wasn’t the best but it was something, it made me feel like nothing else ever has.”

Throughout middle school Chumiez was on and off with skateboarding and rollerblading. He would switch off constantly.

I asked one of Chumiez best friends Alan Chavira, how this constant change in sports made him feel and he said, “It drove me crazy, Chumiez was so good at skateboarding! Every trick he tried he learned that day! I didn’t understand why he didn’t just stick to skateboarding.”

During the summer going into sophomore year Chumiez committed to skateboarding. He thanked Andy, His friend Tony and ALL of his skate krew. They helped him make a choice and showed him how he could have a future with skating.

I talked to Chumiez and asked why did you quit rollerblading and he said, “When you’re on a board you can do an unlimited amount of tricks. I love the possibilities. I love the feeling of the board beneath my feet. Just carving on the concrete there is no other feeling like it!”

So far Chumiez has been skating for three years and already has two sponsors. One of the sponsors being Nakota Designs, and another being E.P.I.C Unlimited.

Last month Chumiez went to South Dakota for the grand opening of a new skate park with the Nakota Designs team. It seemed like the beginning of his young career getting compliments from pros and Team Pain (professional skaters).

There is a good chance that Chumiez will go professional. He has a bright future ahead of him.
